Happy Tolkien Day! Tolkien Day has been held every year on March 25, since 2003. The reason we chose South Africa for today’s country is because J.R.R Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, I’m sure you have already heard of this day. For Tolkien Day we decided to create our own Hobbit Menu and I hope it encourages you to make your own. You don’t have to only eat like a hobbit on Tolkien Day. Whether you’ve watched the movies or have seen the meme, you have heard of second breakfast. We’re not doing second breakfast, that was only created for the movie, In the Lord of the Rings there are only 6 meals and not every Hobbit was able to eat all 6 meals.
Here’s what we’re making today:
Breakfast varied from 6:30-9:30 am so I went with 7 am and made Hobbit Hash. Which was hash browns with spinach, peppers, onions, and cheese. I had coffee with this meal.
11 am is Elevenses. Elevenses is a real thing, observed in many countries, even here in the U.S. We don’t call it Elevenses but do you remember having a morning snack in Elementary school? That was Elevenses. Usually people have tea or coffee with a light snack during this. I went with strawberry and chocolate chip muffins with warm tea.
1 pm, Luncheon. You want this to be a hearty, warm dish so I went with a meat pie. I made mini meat pies with some crescent dough and left over shredded meat with cheese. Hobbits also enjoy wine or an ale with this meal. My boyfriend likes to say “it’s beer o’ clock somewhere” so don’t feel like 1 pm is too early for a drink; unless you need to go somewhere after.
Next is Afternoon tea at 4 pm. I love little finger sandwiches so I wanted to make some of those, I went with cucumber sandwiches and peanut butter cookies. Both are light snacks and go great with tea.
6 pm Dinner we had turkey. I seen from other bloggers that roasted chicken or lamb legs were great choices for Hobbit dinner as well, however we only had turkey in the house. You can pair this with bread and roasted vegetables.
Lastly is Supper, supper can be at 8 or 9 pm, I went with nine. I wanted something light and not too heavy since it is so late. I went with loaded potato soup with a slice of bread. This meal with keep you full all through the night without feeling heavy.
Hope you enjoy our menu and we would love to hear what you would put on yours!
